Rakija

Rakija is a strong alcohol drink similar to brandy and vodka produced through destilation or fermentation of fruit, very popular amongst the Balkan people. The content of alcohol is around 40%, but homemade rakija can be even stronger, from 50-60%.
Rakija is considered the national drink of the Southern Slavs. There are many different types of rakija, depending on the fruit: the Fruit Name of the Basic types are: plum-sljivovica, grapes-lozovaca/loza, pear-krukovaca/viljamovka, apple-jabukovaca, fig-smokvovaca, with additives: herbs/travarica, almonds-orahovaca/orahovica, honey-medovaca/medenica, sour cherry-vinjevac/vinjevaca.
Usually, rakija is colorless when there are no additives. Some types of rakija are held in wooden barrels (oak) for additional aroma and the golden color. It is a popular myth that the strength of a rakija can be seen by the size of the bubble circles which appear when the bottle is shaken up. This is also the way people test the quality of liquors by mistake.
